On the course

It has once again been a very successful 3 weeks. The Scratch Championship went extremely well with the course playing as well as we could have hoped and since then the course has continued performing well. The recent storm put the course back slightly for the past weekend but with a huge effort from the team the course was fully playable on the Saturday after the storm on the Thursday evening, suffice to say the Friday shift from the team was fantastic.

Recently has been the 5th Maintenance period of the season and once again has gone very smoothly, this time we used 12mm solid tines to a depth of 5 inches to break through the lower levels of 40 – 60mm into the rootzone, a light dressing was applied two days after.

Also this week, to the relief of many I am sure, the meadow rough has been cut, rowed and just today bailed. We will now start to scarify the meadow roughs at every opportunity we have to reduce the yield and thickness for next season.

We have also made a start on our winter course improvement, we have decided to use the good weather of late and make a jump on the usual start date of the construction work, this will reduce the potential for damage if the weather turns against us. To date, all new ‘WPJ’ Short course tees have been constructed and are now awaiting turf which will be arriving by the end of September, with a view to have the tees open and playable for the new year. The 16th full tee has also been started, this tee will replace the current mat and be used in the winter period.

We have a new addition to the Maintenance team, Chris Read has joined us from Sweden, he will be a great asset to the team in helping move Temple on to the next level through the coming winter and next season.

Billy and Sam have also now started their second year in the NVQ 2 and NVQ 3 Sports Turf, respectively.

The fortnight ahead

It will be a busy couple of weeks coming up in preparation for the true start of the Course Improvement programme. The bunkers at holes 5 and 7 will be opened up ready to be reshaped, redesigned and then lined with the Bunker Liner which we have used so successfully in the 3rd Greenside bunkers. We will also as previously stated, be turfing the new WPJ Short course tees, and this ontop of our usual course maintenance and daily prep.

Happy Golfing.
