12/02/18 – 16/03/18
On the course
What a difficult month we have had, the weather has ranged from -10 degrees to 4 inches of snow, to +50 mm of rainfall and back up to +12 degrees temperature. The course really is taking a beating, but, staying strong. The greens have full coverage and considering the weather, they are firm and rolling well, the fairways are in as good condition as I have ever seen them coming out of winter, with fantastic definition, the tees also are in excellent condition. I dont think I have experienced such a brutal end of winter/start of spring before in such as the vast changes seen, but this hasn’t effected the quality of the golf course which is testament to our current programme and what we are trying to achieve.
The woodland work has taken a big step forward in the last month with tree clearance on the 7th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th. There are two many areas to list here which we have cleared, thinned or simply lifted branches but overall the course has a far cleaner feel throughout, also wind and air movement as well as wonderful vistas have been much improved.
The newly constructed bunkers at the 1st and 12th have received their first cut and sand will be placed in them ready for the opening in a couple of weeks time.
The fortnight ahead
Next week see’s the start of our maintenance programme for the year with 19 mm solid tines being used on this occasion and a sand dressing after, the weather is turning cold once again so this may disrupt the maintenance slightly and hinder recovery. All greens, approaches and tees will be aerated and sand dressed. The fertility programme will be increased the week after next ready for the spring growth and then all of a sudden we will be looking at the start of summer and the golfing season will be well on its way.
