On the course
Wow how time flies, it has been two months since my last post and what a busy two months we have had. For the last month it has been wet and warm and we have seen some extreme disease pressure on greens and tees but with a strong IPM programme we are able to manage this pressure well. In fact in 3 weeks we received 7 inches of rainfall, 5 inches of which fell in 10 days, with this in mind I feel the course has held up superbly well.
Currently the greenkeeping team are working extremely hard to present the course in the best of conditions and fighting a long battle against the falling leaves, the surfaces are performing well and the golf course is moving into winter in a great position.
4 weeks ago the fairways were over seeded for the second time this season, with this application choosing the worst effected areas, the strike rate and recovery over the last month has been fantastic and we have finally a full coverage on many of the recent poor fairways. I am confident that we will see full recovery and fairways will be as they were before the drought in 2018/2019 in no time.
Construction on the 18th bunkers has begun with work almost complete on the right hand side bunker, these changes will take what was always a great finishing hole and turn it into a stunning finishing hole with well placed bunkers, beautiful Willie Park Jnr humps and hollows and the hole will become both ‘risk and reward’ and ‘heroic’ whilst becoming far fairer for those who are playing for the middle of the fairway.
The fortnight ahead
Next week the greens will be solid tinned with 12mm solids and the lightly sand dressed, the approaches and tees will also receive a similar maintenance.
The 18th bunker will be completed ready for turf which is planned to be laid from the 4th November and then construction on the two remaining bunkers will begin.
Finally, our battle against the falling leaves will continue.
